Cali: Colombia’s Second Medical Tourism Destination

Cali is establishing itself as a leading city for medical tourism in Latin America, ranking second in Colombia after Bogotá.

Its success is driven by advanced hospital infrastructure, high-quality medical services, and comprehensive complementary offerings.

At the Qualinn 2024 Symposium on Innovation and Clinical Excellence, Cali showcased its strengths as a medical tourism hub. Organized by the Cali Chamber of Commerce, the event emphasized the city’s progress in catering to international patients and its growing reputation as a health destination.

“Cali is the second medical tourism destination in Colombia,” said Melissa Vergara, Secretary of Economic Development. “Our city offers a robust and competitive portfolio, combining high-quality medical services with top-notch hospital infrastructure to serve patients from around the globe.”

Certified excellence in healthcare

Cali currently boasts four internationally certified clinics, meeting stringent standards of quality and safety. Three additional institutions are undergoing the certification process, further enhancing the city’s appeal in the global medical tourism market.

“International certifications build patient trust,” said Ana María Castillo, representative of the Cali Chamber of Commerce. “But what truly sets Cali apart is its human talent, competitive costs, and strategic location, making it a highly attractive destination for medical tourism.”

Why do medical tourists choose Cali?

Cali draws patients from around the world for several reasons:

· Affordable costs: Treatments in Cali are up to 60% cheaper than in the U.S. or Europe, with no compromise on quality.

· Short wait times: Patients benefit from significantly faster access to medical care.

· Accredited clinics: Certified institutions ensure trust and confidence among international patients.

· Personalized services: Cali offers specialized transportation, bilingual staff, and wellness tourism options, enhancing the patient and companion experience.

Studies presented at Qualinn 2024 highlight that patients prioritize economic accessibility, certified quality, and supportive recovery environments — all areas where Cali excels.

A seamless medical tourism experience

Cali’s approach to medical tourism extends beyond its healthcare facilities. Clinics and hospitals collaborate with hotels, tour operators, and transportation services, creating a holistic experience for international patients.

Expanding global reach

More than 60 clinics and hospitals in Cali are equipped to serve international patients, with 10 actively pursuing global expansion.

Although Bogotá leads as Colombia’s top medical tourism destination, Cali offers unique advantages, including a strategic location with easy connections to the U.S., Canada, and other international markets.

Cali’s vision of becoming a global leader in medical tourism is taking shape. With certified clinics, competitive services, and a strategic focus, the city is poised to attract more international patients while strengthening its healthcare sector.

This growth positions Cali as a benchmark for innovation and clinical excellence in Latin America.
